A practical DFM review can prevent expensive mold modifications later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a typical molded component, the review should cover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>wall-thickness transitions;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>draft and ejection direction;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ribs, bosses, and snap features;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>undercuts and side actions;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>gate type and location;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>parting-line position;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ejector-pin locations;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>weld-line risks;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cosmetic surfaces;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>critical dimensions and tolerances.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, 1\u20132\u00b0 is a common starting range for draft, although geometry and surface texture can require more. Material also changes the design window. Published molding guidelines give approximate wall-thickness ranges of 1.14\u20133.56 mm for ABS, 0.76\u20133.05 mm for acetal, 0.76\u20132.92 mm for nylon, and 1.02\u20133.81 mm for polycarbonate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also how HingTung approaches new projects. What matters is whether the available presses match the projected area, shot size, resin, mold dimensions, and required clamping force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simplified relationship is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Required clamping force \u2248 projected area \u00d7 cavity pressure \u00d7 safety factor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insufficient force can allow the mold to separate and create flash. This gives the production team more flexibility to match different molds and production requirements rather than relying on a narrow press range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When evaluating an injection molding supplier, however, I would still ask one specific question: <em>Which press do you plan to use for my mold, and why?<\/em> A technically credible supplier should be able to explain the choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treat_Tolerances_as_a_Process_Question\"><\/span><strong>Treat Tolerances as a Process Question<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A drawing filled with \u00b10.05 mm dimensions does not mean every feature will consistently hold \u00b10.05 mm after molding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thermoplastics shrink as they cool, while final dimensions are influenced by resin, fiber orientation, gate location, wall thickness, cooling balance, mold temperature, and processing conditions. Published manufacturing guidelines, for example, commonly separate mold machining tolerances from additional resin-dependent dimensional variation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of assigning unnecessarily tight tolerances everywhere, classify dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Critical:<\/strong> affects sealing, fit, assembly or function.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Important:<\/strong> influences performance but has adjustment margin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reference:<\/strong> does not justify expensive tool correction or intensive inspection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At HingTung, this distinction is useful during DFM because it tells the tooling and quality teams where dimensional control actually matters. Review dimensional stability, appearance, assembly performance, cycle time, scrap, and critical functional characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly useful with glass-filled materials, thin walls, long flow paths, tight mating dimensions, or demanding cosmetic surfaces.
